Meandering between forested banks, and widening to sweep past pebble shores, the Brahmaputra enters India from Tibet, running westward through Assam before turning south into Bangladesh. With different names in each country, it is the Brahmaputra only in India, where it is a sacred river to Hindus along its lower reaches. Here it is a broad and mighty river, passing temples, tea plantations and wildlife sanctuaries; splitting into two channels for 100km and coming together again to form the world’s largest river island, Majuli. Beginning the tour with a day of discovery in ‘colonial Calcutta’, we fly to Guwahati for our first sight of the river, where it tightens to just 1km wide, for a journey that takes us to Ahom era temples in Vishnath and Sibsagar; meets gentle tribal peoples in riverside villages; explores the remote Kaziranga National Park, UNESCO protected, boasting up to a thousand rare one-horned rhinos, and brought into the global spotlight in 2017 with a visit by the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge (now the Prince & Princess of Wales); and tours the UNESCO World Heritage enclave of Majuli Island, a monastic retreat of the Vaishnavite community and a hub of Assam heritage, displayed in traditional dance.
