Treasures of Indochina

From the streets of Saigon to a sail on the Mekong Delta, from the temples of Angkor to the long-hidden town of Luang Prabang, from a cruise of Ha Long Bay to cultural history in Hanoi, this tour is a revealing treasure trove, gathered into just two weeks away

Encompassing the major sites and cities of three contrasting countries; introducing local customs, and cultural events; and choosing central hotels, well placed for restaurants and independent exploration; this journey focuses on the famous and the fabled landmarks of the Indochina trio, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. It begins in Ho Chi Minh City, the phoenix of former Saigon, a fusion of old and new, high-rise towers and riverside stilt-houses, chic boutiques and smoky temples, thriving commerce and thrilling culture. The Mekong Delta makes a leisurely interlude, known as Nine Dragons Delta for its nine tributaries, where rivers and streams form highways and alleys between islands and villages, orchards, and coconut palms. We fly to Cambodia for time in contemporary Siem Reap, to visit the ancient acres of Angkor Wat, the largest religious complex in the world; and to sail on Tonle Sap Lake. In Laos, little Luang Prabang opened to tourism only in 1989. With thirty-three gleaming temples at its heart, it was UNESCO listed just six years later. Hanoi’s thousand years of history is reflected in its buildings and its sense of tradition; and the tour ends with an overnight cruise in the mesmeric scenery of Ha Long Bay.
