Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, remarkable landmarks, and warm hospitality, Georgia is one of Europe’s best kept secrets. Set at the crossroads of trade and tradition for centuries, and enduring Greek, Roman, Persian, Ottoman and Russian conquests, the country’s 5,000 years of history has shaped its unique culture, and spectacular Nature has sculpted its peaks and gorges, magical caves, and mineral springs. While the tour focuses on less-visited gems, it begins in the capital, Tbilisi, amid iconic churches, pavement cafés in picturesque squares, the quaint lanes of the Old Town, and every era of architecture. Intriguing towns include the ancient capital, Mtskheta, Georgia’s spiritual heart since Christianity was established here in 327AD; Kutaisi, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities; museums in Mestia; and Batumi’s Botanical Gardens on the Black Sea. And we tour to terrific topography for the rock hewn fortress of Vardzia Cave Monastery; Rabati castle, crowning a clifftop in Akhaltsikhe; legends of a vengeful Zeus in the echoing caverns of Prometheus Caves; and ‘koshki’ stone towers in unconquerable, isolated Ushguli, almost unchanged in a thousand years, and UNESCO protected for ‘universal value’.
