A journey through the cities and the centuries, via coasts, peaks and plateaus, enjoy a comprehensive circling of significant sights, from Istanbul, at ‘the bridge of continents’, to ancient sites, intriguing culture and ethereal landscapes

Overview

Time-travelling across more than two millennia, this tour visits every era of Turkey’s cultural heritage, from Trojan and Hittite to Greek and Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. It circles from Istanbul’s mosques and palaces, along the Sea of Marmara’s shore to Gallipoli, and crosses the Dardanelles (Hellespont) to the Aegean coast at Çanakkale, the launch pad for visiting ancient Troy. From Izmir’s stylish seafront, the tempo alters for the atmospheric ancient ruins of Ephesus, reconstructed just enough for visitors to ‘join the dots’ and imagine the city in its heyday. We leave the coast at Kusadasi and turn east to the Temple of Aphrodisias and to Pamukkale (‘cotton castle’), where hot springs feed pale blue pools and limestone cliffs appear as frozen waterfalls. Konya’s 12th century Persian culture is seen in ceremonies of the Whirling Dervishes; while Cappadocia’s Göreme Valley is a fairytale scene of eroded rock spires, carved into castles and cave-houses. Hattusha is an intriguing glimpse of the ‘disappeared’ Hittite Empire. Ankara’s Attatürk mausoleum oversees the modern capital from a high hill; and in Bursa, the first Ottoman capital, beautiful buildings inspired its early epithet of Hudavendigar (God’s gift).

Highlights

  • Charm of Istanbul's historic sites and bustling bazaars
  • Majestic travertine terraces at Pamukkale
  • Enchanting landscape of Cappadocia
  • The amazing ancient city of Ephesus
  • Aphrodisias city with stunning marble sculptures
  • A glimpse into Hittite life in Hattusha
